Squalane: Nature’s First Skincare Ingredient

Bask Team

Baby Skin Health Expert

Before your baby ever tries a lotion, a cream, or a balm, they already had the best skincare in the world: vernix caseosa. That waxy, white coating that covers babies at birth isn't random. It's a precisely engineered moisture barrier, and one of its key components is squalene.

From squalene to squalane

Squalene is the single most abundant lipid in vernix caseosa. It's also produced naturally by human skin throughout life, though production declines as we age. The problem with squalene in skincare is that it oxidizes quickly, meaning it goes rancid and loses its effectiveness.

Squalane is the stabilized, hydrogenated form of squalene. It has identical skin benefits but remains shelf-stable for 2+ years without preservatives. Modern squalane is derived from sugarcane, making it plant-based and sustainable.

Why squalane is ideal for infant skin

Using squalane on baby's skin is, in a very real sense, giving their skin what it was designed to have. Here's what makes it special:

  • Biocompatible. Because our bodies produce squalene naturally, squalane is recognized by the skin and absorbed effortlessly. It’s known for having essentially zero risk of sensitization or allergic reaction.
  • Lightweight and non-greasy. Unlike heavier oils and petrolatum, squalane is recognized for absorbing quickly and never feeling sticky or occlusive.
  • Non-comedogenic. With a comedogenicity rating of just 1 (on a scale of 0 to 5), squalane is known for not clogging pores or trapping heat against skin.
  • Deep conditioning. In dermatological literature, squalane is recognized for its ability to integrate with the skin’s natural lipid structure, helping maintain moisture from within.

How we use squalane in the Bask Gentle Liner

In the Bask liner, squalane works alongside shea butter to form the emollient layer that activates with body heat. While shea butter provides a rich, protective barrier on the surface, squalane penetrates more deeply to condition the skin from within. Together, they mimic the dual-layer protection that vernix provided before birth.

We chose sugarcane-derived squalane specifically because it's the purest, most stable source available. No animal-derived ingredients. No petroleum byproducts. Just a plant-based lipid that mirrors what baby's skin already knows.
